A National System of Marine Protected Areas
The National Marine Protected Areas Center just added the first 225 sites to a new National System of Marine Protected Areas. These MPAs cover 10% of US waters; 1/4 of the area of these MPAs is no-take marine reserves, and these are only the charter sites -- more MPAs will be added in the future. The goal of the program is to advance conservation and sustainable use of the ocean. MCBI submitted comments in support of the program and for including all of these MPA's in the new national system. |

A New Conservation Politics MCBI board member David Johns recently published A New Conservation Politics: Power, Organization Building and Effectiveness. "This timely book explains why facts alone don't motivate and mobilize people to care for the natural world. Even better, it spells out what will work, based on a frank and informed assessment of human nature applied to social and political movements. If you would rather see change than be right, this readable and authoritative guide should be your bible." - Michael Soulé, Professor Emeritus, Environmental Studies, University of California, Santa Cruz. |
Monk Seal Found Dead on Kauai The annual monk seal count this year was a success, but unfortunately one of the animals seen during the monk seal count was found dead the next day by a couple of fishermen. One news report indicates officials believe humans could be responsible for this seal's death. An investigation is underway. According to a statement from NOAA, they knew this seal well: "He had [worn] a critter-cam. He was an adventurer, circumnavigating the island on a regular basis. He followed night divers around, using their lights to help him catch his dinner, as can be seen in these video clips." |
